Depression – what is that?

Depression can manifest in many ways, and it’s not always easy to identify. Here are a few of its most common “faces”:

Sadness and Hopelessness: This is one of the most obvious faces of depression. A person may feel constant sadness, a sense of emptiness, or hopelessness without a clear reason.

Lack of Energy and Motivation: Depression often leads to a decrease in energy and motivation. Daily activities can become difficult, and even simple tasks can seem overwhelmingly hard.

Sleep Problems: Both insomnia and excessive sleepiness can be symptoms of depression. Some people with depression have trouble falling asleep, while others may sleep much more than usual.

Changes in Weight and Appetite: Some people with depression experience changes in appetite, leading to sudden weight gain or loss.

Social Isolation: People with depression may avoid social contacts and isolate themselves from others. They may withdraw from previous interests and activities.

Feelings of Guilt and Worthlessness: People with depression often feel guilty, even if there are no rational reasons for it. They may also feel worthless or inadequate.

Irrational Thoughts and Pessimism: Depression can lead to irrational thoughts, such as the belief that everything is hopeless and nothing will improve.

Physical Symptoms: In addition to emotional symptoms, depression can also cause physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach problems, or body aches.

Suicidal Thoughts: In the most severe cases of depression, a person may have suicidal thoughts or self-harm plans.

These different “faces” of depression can occur independently or in various combinations. It’s important to be aware of these symptoms and seek help if you notice them in yourself or someone else.
